BRAINSPOTTING THERAPY

Helping the Brain and Body Process What Words Alone Sometimes Cannot

Sometimes we understand something logically, but our nervous system still feels stuck. You may know why you feel anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or reactive, yet certain experiences, emotions, or patterns continue showing up.

Brainspotting is a gentle, brain-body approach that helps access and process experiences stored deeper in the brain and nervous system, allowing healing to happen beyond insight alone.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that uses eye position and focused attention to help access experiences, emotions, and memories that may be stored in the body and nervous system.

The idea behind Brainspotting is simple: where you look can influence what you feel and access internally. By identifying specific eye positions, called brainspots, we can connect with experiences that may feel difficult to reach through traditional talk therapy alone.

Brainspotting can support healing with:

  • Trauma and overwhelming experiences

  • Anxiety and chronic stress

  • Emotional blocks or feeling stuck

  • Grief and loss

  • Perfectionism and high achievement patterns

  • Dissociation or disconnection from self

  • Childhood experiences that continue to impact the present

  • Relationship challenges and attachment wounds

  • Experiences that feel difficult to explain but are strongly felt in the body

A Gentle, Client-Centred Approach

Brainspotting is not about forcing memories, reliving trauma, or pushing you beyond what feels manageable. Sessions move at your pace.

Together, we pay attention to what is happening internally, including thoughts, emotions, body sensations, images, impulses, or simply a felt sense, while creating enough safety and support for your nervous system to process what it is ready for.

Many people find Brainspotting especially helpful when they feel like they have talked about something many times, but still notice their body responding as though the experience remains unresolved.

Integrating Brainspotting with Other Approaches

Brainspotting often works best when integrated with approaches that support both insight and nervous system healing.

At Ottawa Therapy Collective, Brainspotting is often combined with Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed approaches, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, attachment-focused work, and relational approaches.

These approaches can complement one another by helping you:

  • Understand the protective patterns that developed for survival

  • Build greater awareness of emotions, body sensations, and nervous system responses

  • Strengthen self-compassion and connection with different parts of yourself

  • Explore relationship patterns, attachment wounds, and emotional needs

  • Develop new ways of responding to experiences that once felt overwhelming

Because healing is not one-size-fits-all, therapy is tailored to your unique experiences, goals, and nervous system needs.

Is Brainspotting Right for Me?

Brainspotting may be a good fit if:

  • You feel stuck despite insight or self-awareness

  • You notice strong emotional or physical reactions that feel difficult to explain

  • Traditional talk therapy has only taken you part of the way

  • You want an approach that includes both mind and body

  • You are looking for a deeper way of processing trauma, stress, or emotional experiences

You do not need to know exactly where to start. Therapy is collaborative, and together we can explore what approach feels most supportive for you.
